Lido School Helps Build an Environmentally Conscious Business Community

June 18, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Students at the Long Beach Public Schools’ Lido Elementary School are helping to promote recycling around the community through the “Adopt-a-Bin” program, presented by Leah Tozer and Amanda Moore of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce Board. Classes sponsored local businesses and presented them with recycling bins during a gathering held on May 21.

Students and staff members generously provided donations to cover the $20 cost of each recycle bin. They also created signs for the businesses to encourage recycling and will monitor their efforts through follow-up visits. This initiative was coordinated with the objective of engaging the entire business community in practices that reduce litter and improve the environment.

Among the participating businesses are Bethpage Credit Union, Blacksmith’s Bread, Beach Baby Day Care, Tutti Frutti, Edward Jones Financial Advisor Kelly Sullivan, Engel & Volkers Real Estate, Long Beach Printing, Youth Theatre, NEFCU, Inspect R Us, Island Park Car Wash, Body & Soul, Barrier Beach Management, Creative Vibe, KoKo Fit Club, GWM Architect, P.C., Castle Real Estate, Denis Kelly Law Firm, Café of Life, Ooh LaLa, Cybernet and Key Food.

This is one of the many recent recycling projects that Long Beach schools have taken on. Last year, students from the high school’s Life Skills program teamed up with the Town of Hempstead on a recycling program. Students have also participated in environmental improvement ventures such as the International Coastal Cleanup Day held in September.

Fifth-graders raise awareness and funds for ALS

June 18, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

When Chris Pendergast visited Edna Louise Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District a few months ago to share a message of strength and determination, his words left an imprint on several of the students.

His story of living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease for more than 20 years inspired four fifth-grade girls to host a fundraiser.

Gwenivere Connelly, Julia Fife, Alice Snyder and Emily Snyder sold small stuffed animals, loom bracelets, pencils, erasers, notepads and more to raise $334.35 for the ALS Ride for Life Campaign.

“We are very proud of them for taking this initiative to help out this worthy cause,” said Principal Thomas Meehan.

Seeing the needs of others at Prodell Middle School

June 15, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Throughout the academic year, Albert G. Prodell Middle School Student Council members coordinate and engage in activities with their peers and spearhead fundraising opportunities to benefit the larger community.

One of their recent accomplishments was collecting 88 pairs of glasses for New Eyes, an organization that provides eyeglasses to those who cannot afford them.

School social worker and student council adviser Andrea Monz noted she is proud of the accomplishment of the council members and the school community and families, whose donated used eyeglass frames will be outfitted with new prescriptions and distributed to people in need around the world.

Sixth-grader Matthew Cerniglia, seventh-grader Courtney Greene, eighth-grader and student council president Joelle Ialacci, sixth-grader Elizabeth Sabino, and seventh-grader Corinne Suppa were instrumental in getting others to share their vision.

Reinhard students have a Reason 2 Smile

Two African students will now be able to attend the Jambo Jipya School in Mtwapa, Kenya due to the fundraising efforts of Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center’s Student Advisory Council in the Bellmore School District. The students collected $500 for Reason 2 Smile, a nonprofit organization providing opportunities for children to attend the Jambo Jipya school, as well funding their living quarters at the accompanying children’s home.

During an assembly in which the students presented the check to executive director Donna Rosenblum on June 13, Principal Patricia Castine explained that leadership is seen in the community service performed by the district’s students. “To be a true leader, you have to go further in the world,” she said. “Part of being a leader is caring about the world.”

Ms. Rosenblum gave a presentation on life in Mtwapa, noting the differences between living in Kenya and the United States. She also showed the students photos of the school and the accompanying home, as well as photos of her trips to visit the children housed there. Rosenblum also thanked the students for their generous donation and donated Patricia Newman’s “Neema’s Reason to Smile” to the school library.
